What’s broken?

Despite the many ways in which breakthrough virtualization technologies have changed data centers for the better, one major challenge exists: storage. Almost all of today’s techniques and technologies for storage management were built for physical – not virtual – servers. If virtual servers worked just like physical servers, that’d be fine. But many of the assumptions made by designers of storage for physical servers just aren’t true for virtual servers.

Lots of people have felt the pain. For example, a respected research and analysis firm found in a not-yet-published survey that almost 3/4ths of IT pros had new storage problems caused by virtualization. Our cheeky theory is that perhaps the other 1/4 just haven’t pushed their implementations hard enough yet.

Read on to learn how virtual servers break storage.
